Dr. Dan Cohen, a Medical Doctor with neurology training who lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota gives some great information on how stress levels interact with the physiology of the human body, with hypertension and high blood pressure as a result.
Since stress build up is really a result of constant “fight or flight” mechanisms in the body, what is actually happening is that the brain is telling the body to maintain a higher level of blood pressure too often due to environmental conditions or perceptions of the one’s daily dose of adverse activity. When this happens the body adjusts its baseline physiology so that this new level of blood pressure is maintained, because the brain thinks the body must prepare for a fight or flight response.
